Introducing the EU Flight Emissions Label (FEL)

The FEL aims to boost consumer confidence by enabling passengers to make informed choices when booking flights while also helping reduce aviation’s environmental impacts.

The FEL will be based on reliable data presented in an easily understandable format. It brings clarity to the impacts of flight choices by establishing clear methods on how airlines can display their improved environmental performance. The legislation aims to both protect consumers from greenwashing and help airlines communicate effectively by providing credibility and clarity for environmental claims made.

Using the Emissions Data

The FEL metrics are for labelling a flight due to happen in the future based on the flight and cabin class selected by a passenger. Labels are to be applied to a specific route, airline, aircraft and aircraft configuration with a score for each seating class.

This means if the airline changes the aircraft type or configuration which is scheduled on a route, then the label must also change to match, and a class selection by a passenger should also have the relevant class score.

Primary and secondary label score displays are provided, only the footprint (CO2eq per passenger) is required in the primary display.

The label is not designed for accounting purposes. The label is an indication of what may happen in the future and corporate reporting is a statement of what happened in the past. As the label developed, the system used to produce footprints for reporting purposes. Until that time, the label should not be used for corporate reporting.

In the manual, 2 sections are relevant data integrators using the emissions data

  • Public CSV use guide: It provides a brief overview of the information in the FEL and guidelines on what the figures mean, the display and distribution of the labels.
  • Public CSV developer guide: Technical overview of the FEL results, including display and distribution. It is therefore aimed at developers and data management teams. It provides extensive details on the data fields provided by EASA in the Public CSV file, display and design guidelines on an operators’ e-commerce sites, and information on the file versioning that EASA will use.
